What Prada's Double Club Teaches Experiential Marketing Agencies in Los Angeles

Oscar Week in Los Angeles is a battleground. Brands flood the city, throw cocktail parties, and fight for celebrity attention. Prada didn't fight. They built something no one else could copy.
What Prada Actually Did
For experiential marketing agencies in Los Angeles, the Prada Mode Double Club in March 2024 is required studying. Prada partnered with German conceptual artist Carsten Höller and Drake's Luna Luna to transform a massive Arts District warehouse into an ephemeral nightclub and art installation, open for two private nights before swinging its doors to the public on Oscars day.
- A functioning carnival inside a warehouse: a carousel, a swing ride, and a Silver Streak roller coaster, all original vintage rides, surrounded by multi-colored bulb lighting and multiple bars
- Music curated by Drake running throughout the space, pulling his cultural gravity into the room without him physically being there
- A guest list that included Hunter Schafer, Ice Spice, Damson Idris, and Odell Beckham Jr., with hundreds more lining up outside on Friday night
This wasn't a press event dressed up as a party. It was a fully realized physical world that happened to have a Prada logo attached to it.
Why It Worked
Prada made three smart bets at once. First, timing. Dropping the activation mid-Oscar Week meant every entertainment journalist and every celebrity already in Los Angeles was a potential attendee or amplifier. The global spotlight was already pointed at the city.
Second, artistic legitimacy. Carsten Höller is not a brand collaborator you hire to add credibility. His work investigates spectacle and joy through a contemporary art lens. That tension, luxury fashion meets carnival rides meets fine art, created a genuinely strange and memorable space.
Third, cultural layering. Luna Luna's history runs deep. Amusement park rides originally designed by Salvador Dalí and Jean-Michel Basquiat, hidden in storage for decades before Drake's DreamCrew revived them, gave the whole activation a backstory that traveled far beyond the event itself.
The room earned its own press. That's the difference between a brand moment and a brand party.
The Lesson for Brands
A 2024 report found that 78% of consumers are more likely to engage with brands that offer visually stimulating, shareable experiences. Prada didn't just meet that bar, they built the bar, the carousel, and the stage around it.
The real takeaway is this: cultural timing plus genuine artistic investment produces something people want to talk about, attend, photograph, and remember. That combination is hard to manufacture. But it's exactly what a thoughtful activation strategy can engineer.
Where Motion LA Comes In
We work with brands who want to own a moment in this city, not just show up for one. Los Angeles rewards brands that commit to spectacle with intention. If you have a product launch, a cultural hook, or a calendar moment worth owning, we know how to build the room around it.
Got an activation idea that deserves the full treatment? That's exactly what we do. Let's build it.
